Participants: Me, anyone who joins Location: Second Chance Center, Dry Gulch Time of Day: 10:00 AM Description: Second Chance is an Equestrian Center that houses horses who have been mistreated, injured, or sold because of issues stemming from abuse. Lots of people from the town of Dry Gulch visit for therapy and many that come there are volunteers to care for the horses who are still in recovery. Free to Join?: Yes!! Please, join!!! [I will be using these brackets for OOC- I don't care how you indicate you're speaking OOC, but I would like for it to be indicated in some way so that there's no confusion. Also be sure to be clear on any and all of the characters you're playing. I rp with the horses talking to each other. Yes, I know. Anyway, you're free for your horse to not talk but that's how I'm going to do it, so if it bothers you.... Also I'll be playing as Lorelei, Shiann's daughter, because logically Shiann is busy at DPE with the Tekes and doesn't have time to volunteer. And, well, I want to, lol.] Lorelei shivered as she looked over the gray gelding that had seen better days. She wasn't cold, but she couldn't imagine what the horse had been through. "Found him out in the neighbor's stable. Don't know how he got like that." The woman who'd brought him told her as she lit yet another cigarette. "Can't afford to keep him and he's got a mean streak. I'd take him to an auction, but can't afford to drive him that far either." She said, blowing out smoke. Lorelei glared at the woman. She'd seen the woman with the horse when she'd been a child. She knew the owner of the horse. And she also knew the neighbor didn't have a stable. You can't hide things in a small town. "That's alright," she said in her signature sugar-sweet sarcasm, "I'm sure the auction would have turned such a mean horse away." She rolled her eyes. "You're right about that! Mean sucker he is! You got a brain on you, girl!" The woman said heartily, not interpreting the sarcasm. The horse was a broken animal, in body and spirit. He held his head low, only looking up when someone got close to him, and made no move to exit the trailer. He was thin and weak, looked wormy, and acted as though he may fall over any minute. But she'd seen worse, and helped heal worse, and when all was said and done he'd be back on his feet, and make a good kid horse. She hooked her lead rope onto his halter and led him out of the trailer. The horses eyes sparked a little when he looked at her, but it quickly faded and was replaced with the dull look she'd seen too many times. She rubbed his face softly, and started with him toward the stalls. "Don't let him bite ya!" The woman warned, closing up the trailer and hopping in the truck. Lorelei rolled her eyes yet again and put the new resident into a comfortable stall.

Jenny wandered up the gravel drive towards the Second Chance Center. She had originally come to Dry Gulch to look for a new horse, but had seen the center and had decided to come and have a look around. She pulled nervously on her side-pony as a woman stalked towards her from the center.
"I'd give it a minute hun. They've a nasty one in there- take a chunk out your arm without blinkin'. Sheesh, best for everone if they jus' shoot him. No good for nothing." She squashed the stump of her cigarette under her boot.
"Pretty sure he can't be that bad- surely it would be against their interests to take in a dangerous horse?" Jenny quietly cursed her british accent, which stuck out like a sore thumb.
"What would you know? Barely out of school, I bet. Puh. Brits, think ya know everything and own ever'where. Mind ya own business, hun. That horse was bad. You wouldnt know."
Jenny stepped back then turned to head into the center.
"I know horse abuse when I see it. I saw you bring the grey in. You deserved every bite you got. It wasn't the horse's fault- God, if I was that horse, you'd be hard pushed to be walking right now."
Jenny strode away into the center, leaving a slightly dumb-struck woman standing in the drive.
"Cow." Jenny mumbled under her breath. God, she needed a cup of tea.

Lorelei glanced up through the big french window toward the drive, having wondered why the horrible woman hadn't left yet and wondering if she would have to politely ask her to move her bug ugly vehicle and flat, even uglier personality off the premises, but saw instead a girl she didn't realize saying something to the woman that made the woman speechless for a few seconds, then go get in the truck and drive off. She smirked- Anyone who could make that woman shut up deserved a gold medal- then frowned, wondering what a newcomer would be doing in Dry Gulch. It wasn't the most active of places.
But, it was none of her business why the newcomer was here- Her natural southern hospitality kicked in and she quickly fed the gray some oats- not so much as he would hurt himself- and happily noted the spark back in his eyes as he glanced at her, almost a thank-you. As her mother had told her before, you can hear what a horse is thinking, you just have to listen with your eyes and your soul. She didn't know if she believed it or not, but..
... But, she wasn't making a very good impression by standing her and quietly pondering anything, now, was she? She smiled brightly and tossed the lead rope onto a hook and went to the front door of the stable to greet the woman.

Jenny laughed internally as the dumb-founded woman started up her truck. Shaking her head slightly, Jenny headed towards the barn andd the woman who had just come out the barn.
"Hey! I'm Jenny- I was driving round town and I heard about the centre and was wondering if you could show me around? It sounds like a really rewarding job- I'd be happy to help out for the week I'm here!"

"Nice to meet you Jenny!" She said, smiling brightly, truly excited that someone new was here, even if it was just for a week. "If you'll follow me," She said, starting towards the stable. "This is where we keep the horses- I mean, of course you got that," she said, flashing yet another smile over her shoulder, "but this end is the new arrivals, the ones that still need lots of work and help. Over on the other end are the horses that have been here awhile, almost all are working now, as therapy horses." She said, pausing to affectionately pat the gray's forehead, who was showing more life now that hunger wasn't clawing at his belly, and had his head over the stall door.

"Was that the grey the woman bought in? Hope she wasnt a friend as I might have just given her a bit of an earful!" Jenny reached over to scratch the nose of the grey, who stuck his nose into her side in response. She laughed as the nose began to poke around, and quickly fished out a sugar cube from her ever-present treat store. "Hes lovely!" She smiled over her shoulder "How people can treat a horse like that, I have no idea! How many rescues have you taken in?"

Lorelei snorted. "A friend! No, I kept hoping he'd throw her into the river, but he's too nice for that," She said, grinning impishly. She paused, continuing with the tour. "Since I've been here, we've had around fifteen," She said, lightly petting a scarred red mare, who shied away- Barely. She was getting tamer, less afraid, Lorelei noted. "But it's been here longer than I have, and I've never thought to ask- I kind of think I may not want to know. As small as Dry Gulch is, you'd think we'd never have this problem, but people from all around bring horses to us." She frowned, mulling that over. "Most, we rehabilitate, and then if they're fit, we put them up for adoption. Usually, those are the 'light' cases." She said, twisting her face in disgust at the thought, that this thing happens often enough that there are degrees of it. "The ones that won't do well on a private farm, we keep here, and if they're friendly and happy, they become therapy horses." She smiled as one of the therapy horses, a blue roan stallion with white stockings everyone affectionately called Mr. Fancypants (Or just Pants for short) poked his head over the stall and neighed at them.

"I still dont get why people would hurt such lovely horses!" Jenny tugged at her side pony again "And for such a small town, thats a lot! Bet the horses cant believe their luck to end up here!" Jenny reached out to pet the roan stallion who was begging for attention over his stall door, and quickly palmed him a sugar cube. "He cant be a rescue, can he? He looks so good!"

Isabella, a recently-turned 18 year old girl, whistled to the dog that stood at her side. Achoo, the dog, rubbed up against Izzy's leg. "All right, we're here, Achoo." The blonde girl's eyes scanned the rescue center. The dog, even though she wasn't on a leash, followed Izzy to the door. Isabella knocked. No answer. "Hello?" Izzy called, making Achoo bark.
Achoo sneezed three times, that's what earned her her name -- she sneezed whenever she caught a scent. "Hello?" Izzy wondered where the head of Second Chance Center was...

"He was more of a neglect case," She explained. "The owners packed up and left. He was without food for days. They were very thorough in their training though, and after his recovery we decided to keep him. He's great with children." She said, smiling. She looked toward the door as she heard the raps and the bark. "Come in," She called, thinking it may be one of her superiors.

Jenny spun round and grinned at the blonde girl and her dog who had just come in. "Hey! I'm Jenny- are you here to look around too?" The girls dog ran up to them, and laughing Jenny bent down and started ruffling the fur of the dog, who was behaving more like a puppy.

((I would like to join in! I hope its alright.))
Nirvana slowly pulled up into the parking lot of the Second Change Rescue, something she had heard about all the way in Dry Creek. And Dry Creek was nothing but a very small town, with very old traditions. Nirvana came, hoping to learn some new things. Being a woman of old horsemanship methods, taught to her by her boyfriend's father. Though, it was in her blood. Being a full blooded native american woman really helped when it came to horses, for Nirvana it was something that just clicked with her.
Though Nirvana was a native woman, no one would guess it. She was pale, with light blond hair, died of course, and her hair braided into tight braids against her head pulled back into a pony tail. She also had a number of piercings, ranging from her lips to her ears. She also had tight dark skinny jeans around her bottom, and a light colored tank top with a leather jacket over it. Something about her...Just wasn't human.
She slowly slid out of her truck, her dog barking at her as she would shut the door before he could get out. "Stay Monster."She patted the large American Bully on the head, rubbing over his cropped ears. "I don't know if they allow dogs in here yet." She slowly pulled her sun glasses off, hissing a little at the sun. "Half of the reason I hate sun glasses."She giggled placing them over her dogs eyes. Behind her truck was a nice large trailer, big enough to house four horses.
She slowly walked into the main office, not finding anyone at all. "Thats odd. I hope I didn't come on anyones lunch break." She pulled the one ear phone from her ear, which was playing some kind of heavy rock music, her cowgirl boots hitting against the ground as she walked into the barn area. "Hello? I called about bringing a pregnant mare here?"She called out softly, not wanting to spook any of the horses. She was sure they had enough trauma in their lives before coming here.

((Of course it's alright! ^_^ ))
"Over here," Lorelei called, frowning. A pregnant mare? What had happened? "What's wrong with her?" She asked, sadness creeping into her tone.

Jenny's head shot up at the call, as did Lorelei's. "A pregnant mare? Poor thing- How is she?" She anxiously started pulling her side ponytail, braiding then unbraiding small sections of it. She hated seeing suffering horses, especially when they were pregnant. The fact two of her own mares were in foal probably didnt help- the thought of them suffering as the new mare probably was didn't bear thinking about.

"Hi," Izzy replied, smiling. "I'm Izzy, and this is Achoo." Achoo barked when she heard her name; her long silky coat shook a bit. "This is Second Chance Center, correct? I found this ad on the internet about it, and was wondering if you would need any help around the place?" Isabella's Egyptian accent stuck out like a sore thumb. Izzy had lived with her Uncle Liam for almost 11 years in Egypt.
