What is it with Blackjack? Lucas here, you'll have t'excuse me if I'm not my normal bright self cause something really odd has happened. Those of you who saw Blackjack yesterday in his pictures can vouch he were black as the night apart from a white stripe and 2 white coronet markings. It'd seem the last owner was rather unscrupulous and dyed much of his white markings black, I wonder if there was something to hide.
I only know this as papa sent me to go bring him over to the training and competition stables. The new guys seem to have settled in enough in the environment they're in now to join our competition rank, they're all fully trained anyway! He was acting a bit odd when I was leading him about, looking around a lot but his ears never moved, I just assumed he was curious but it did seem odd.
After telling papa he said that he'd ride him a bit see if anything was wrong and sent me to go bring him in to tack him up and that he'd be ridden in the indoor arena. Now what horse won't come running at oats been rattled in a bucket? At the time he was laid down in his own little world and spooked when he suddenly noticed me - even though I'd not been keeping quiet at all! It was as if he hadn't heard me coming.
Anyway, maybe papa will know whats wrong....

What is it with Blackjack? (Part 2)
Seeming as Lucas is still too busy laughing at what happened I figure it down to me to continue the story.
I led Blackjack over to our newly finished indoor school - it was threatening to rain so I figured better to stay dry then to get wet. I also figured after riding him check his paces out seeming as Lucas said he was acting strange I'd ring Nathan up, let him know about the fact that I'd be contacting him about four already registered Irish Sports Horses, and also that one of them wasn't as he seemed when first brought, so assumingly his registration wouldn't be 'correct'.
At first it was all going well, so he didn't seem to be listening with his ears to my commands and seemed to be a bit sluggish at picking up and moving on - but surely nothing that some work would change. It took me by surprise then as we were passing by the gate just as Lucas walked into the barn door that he took off. Surely he'd heard the barn door open, it couldn't have been that big a surprise could it?
Long story short I fell off and he took off around the ring, thankfully Lucas managed to catch him and calm him down. I was fine, just winded, and once I got to my feet I rung the vet to come and check him over. Lucas took him to one of the wash stalls so that he could be examined easier and we waited for the vet to come. While we waited I took the chance to then ring Nathan. I figured it was only polite to inform the guy.
While waiting for him to answer I picked up the paperwork that was granted frowning as I noticed that Blackjack had also been granted breed approval, that made no sense considering he was a gelding. Just what was going on here? Finally Nathan answered. "Hi, Nathan, I'm just ringing to let you know I've brought four registered Irish Sports Horses, I'll send the paperwork to you, but there's one called Blackjack, given the registration number #00024. It says on his papers he's black, however it would seem his owners were hiding something. There was a rain shower after he came here and its revealed white markings. It would appear that he's taken on more Splash characteristics, I don't know if there's any more hidden so I'll wash him down, but I've got the vet out to check him. Also I wanted to notify you that I got him as a gelding but his certificate says he's got breed approval, I'm guessing you'll want a full health check result and a DNA test with his updated registration?" at the affirmative he smiled "I'll send as soon as possible, the vets just arrived, thank you again," quickly I'd hung up to inform the vet of the need for a DNA test as well.
Hopefully it was nothing expensive wrong with the boy, maybe just still stiff after the journey - but something was saying 'no somethings wrong' in my mind.

Awww, poor Blackjack. Hope, he gets better soon. Can't believe people paint horses to sell them. Well, actually I can, I've seen it happen in RL. And that fall is kinda funny, at least from an outside view.

What is it with Blackjack? (Part 3)Ami here again - The vet gave Blackjack a thorough check, and took samples for a DNA test, after leaving he was turned out into his field with the other horses, including Jonas and Sweetie. It took at least 2 weeks where I was teaching Lucas on Sweetie, those two have really taken a shine to each other and I think he'll soon be ready for his first 'major' contest - which reminds me I need to get his show jacket ready - it'll be his birthday soon and I figure what better gift? After 2 weeks I was surprised to see the vet coming with the envelope in hand. I'd been working Blackjack a bit in the round ring, and avoiding been squashed at his spooks. I was also surprised to see her leading a pony - I knew she'd rescued one who couldn't ever be ridden due to mishandling by humans making him more likely to lash out then anything - but I couldn't work out what this had to do with our stables. Then she explained that the DNA test had highlighted something that confirmed her suspicions, that Blackjack was deaf, he was a Splash and had inherited deafness from one of his parents. That would explain at least why he was gelded. In a way it explained why he'd had the white markings covered up for sale - and the reason for the job lot. But why a pony? It soon became clear as the vet went on to explain that if he took Merrylegs - that was the ponies name - as a friend then maybe he could help him with fully adapting to his lack of hearing in the pasture and as a confidence boost during training to try and ease the spooking off. It was worth a try right? Blackjack had already trotted to the fence of the pen, nostrils flared head extending as he tried to sniff at the pony, who near on dragged the vet to meet the much taller Blackjack. It seemed that they'd be friendly - and the pony was gelded so no chance of fighting. We let them sniff for a while longer before we turned them out to field together. It was like they'd been friends all along as they galloped over the field racing each other. I stood and watched for a while, and as night fell Lucas managed to get a picture of them both laying down to rest and graze at the grass. The vet had long since gone by this point, it seems that at least Blackjack has a new friend. It'll be a challenge to overcome but I'm sure we'll manage.

Hooray for deaf splash whites! My splash thoroughbred stallion PIcasso is deaf in character as is his new filly Kahlo.

Thanks High Point - I'm trying to make it so not everything is 'perfect' in the story just like it isn't in real life ^_^
