Grace was born and brought up as your typical "city slicker". As a young girl, her father was arrested, and soon after, her mother ran off and abandoned her. Her grandfather adopted her and moved her to Appaloosa Plains. There, he bought her her first pony. A good, sound, palomino paint horse named Amigo.
Grace was a determined young girl and built a
fence for her horse and put up some cavalettis for her to train over. Every
single day after school, she would go right out to Amigo and start training
herself. Every chance she got, she had lessons at the local equestrian
center.
Then one day, tragedy struck. She got
up one morning to get ready for school, and she sensed something was wrong.
Usually at 7 AM in the morning, Grandpa Rosen is right up, fixing breakfast or
reading the newspaper in his favorite chair. She knocked on his bedroom door. No
answer. She slowly slid the door open to find him, laying in his bed in a
soundless sleep of eternity. She quickly ran over to his side and checked his
pulse. Nothing. He passed away in his sleep.
Not wanting to risk having to leave the little
cottage that her Grandpa bought, she was more afraid that the social workers
would take away her beloved horse, Amigo. After that she spent countless nights
where she didn't sleep. Cleaning the house, learning how to cook. She only came
out when Amigo needed more food or water, and to go to school. She didn't train
at all.
After passing out in school a little
bit too many of times and getting detention for it, failing every class that she
took, she decided to drop out and head on with her life. She visited the
cemetary and finally put Grandpa Rosen to rest. She went back to the house with
a sense of pride that she will not give up. She trained endlessly after that.
Perfecting her cooking skills. Cleaning the house like a professional. But she
couldn't help but feel lonely.
Grace knew it was time. Time
to go find somewhere else to live. With people. She could not stay in this
little cottage forever. She moved to a small horse ranch, where the owners horse
had passed away. They gave Grace a room and told her she can only stay if she
makes herself useful. Every morning she got up and cooked them breakfast. When
they got home, she made them dinner. While they were at work she made trips to
the Equestrian Training Grounds. Jumping over every obstacle she could come
across. Then one day, another disaster struck. Her 'guardians' had called the
social workers to take away Amigo. She begged and begged for them to let him
stay but they said no more. He is eating up all their money, and so was she.
Grace was furious at them! How could they take away the only thing she had left?
She immediatlely went to 'her' room and gathered all her stuff. Stormed down the
corridor, opened the front door, and made sure to give it a good hard slam. She
walked over to the sidewalk. The guardian yelled back, "Where are you going to
go? You have nowhere! You have no one!"
Grace Rosen ran
away, crying. She couldn't believe that this was happening. She ran straight to
the Neighborhood Adoption Center where she found Amigo in a paddock. But it was
locked. The owners of the center said she could not adopt because they had taken
him away for a reason. She tried explaining her situation but the owner would
have no excuses. She showed Grace the door.
She didn't know
what to do, or where to go. She ended up going to the park and sleeping on a
bench. She woke up to a face peering down at her. It was a lady. Grace got up
and greeted her. She found out that she was the mother of the Bedlington family.
Patricia Bendlington invited Grace to stay out her house, after Grace told her
about her situation.
Now living in the
Bedlington residence, Grace spent the rest of her teen years living there.
Buying her second horse, Tango. Finally mastering her riding skill and mastering
Tango's jumping and racing skill. Winning her first international shows in every
event with him. She sold him for 20k as buyers were lining up the lot trying to
buy him.
She decided this next time, she was going to give her
next horse a second chance. She looked up on the computer for horses to adopt.
She came across one beautiful grey gelding. She immediately adopted that one
named Lightning.
Lightning was... um... a one
of a kind horse. He had all the right traits, just not the brains or the skill
to do anything Grace wanted him to do. Every jump he was put up at, he refused.
When it came to cavalletti's - no problem. He still couldn't jump an amateur
gate at level 7. His specialty was racing, but even that he struggled with.
Grace finally gave up and sold him for 12k after she couldn't do anything more
with him. She just wasn't the rider for him.
