STRENGTHS • She's a generally cheerful person, always ready to look at the bright side, but that's come out of some hardships. She's happy to be on her own, yet she gets on well with others whether she knows them well or not.
WEAKNESSES • She can be very stubborn at times, sometimes even taking everything personally. She's very emotional and it can get the better of her when she's been having a particularly rough time of things.
FUN FACT • The first time she met Jed Partridge (see bio for more on him) was when she was only seven. The first thing she said to him was, "Welcome to the farm. I'm in charge because he's old (pointing at her father, who was trying to hide his laughter). You take your orders from me, yes sir!" Jed had been ten at the time. Whenever he's laughing to himself, Alice knows what he's remembering and burns with embarrassment.
PET PEEVES • Limits and rules. She's not a lawbreaker, but knowing she's tied down in some way gets her very irritated.
FAVORITE HANGOUTS • Out in the hills when she's at home, or by the sea in Devon when she visits her father. With horses of course.
Alice Harling is an only child. Her mother, Anita Harling (born in Calais, maiden name Fareway) was fatally wounded not long after Alice's fifth birthday. After just dropping her first foal, Anita's prize Eventing mare, Jazeer, had kicked out at a sudden noise. In the confined space of the stall, Jazeer's hind hooves had caught Anita full in the chest. She died in hospital that same night. Alice was raised solely by her father from there on in, but when she was seven, Daniel's faithful friend Frank Partridge bought his ten year old son, Jed, to work in the stalls. Jed and Alice virtually grew up together, with Jed being a big-brother figure to her for most of her life.
Their time at primary school was mostly uneventful, but Alice had difficulty making long-lasting friends, mainly because the death of her mother still felt very close. She barely saw Jed in school hours and having spent most of her youth around animals, she struggled to understand people. When she reached secondary school however, she was lumped into giving a school tour to Carey Lennington, a transfer student from America. Carey was so full of life that Alice at first struggled to keep up, but with time and many escapades, Carey and Alice became an infamous pair of petty troublemakers. With Carey's help, Alice found her feet again and their friendship still lasts, as strong and crazy as ever.
Sixth Form. Carey returned to the States, but still kept in touch, almost incessantly so. Alice discovered a love for story telling and took up a course in Advanced English and by the end of her time at sixth form, she had three decent A-Levels under her belt and the world before her. But she missed her horses and most of all, missed spending time at the stud with her father and the Partridges.
In September 2009, Alice attended university to read English Literature, but halfway through her third and final year, Alice received a frantic telephone call. When you have a friend like Carey, life can be a little unexpected.
An opportunity had arisen. Daniel Harling, Frank Partridge and Carey's older sister Emma had just succeeded in opening a small academy for young Eventers, but they desperately needed some extra hands around the place. Jed, Carey and Alice rose to the challenge together and what followed was a year of hectic mornings, long afternoons and stressful nights: with more students arriving every month (not to mention their horses) it was all they could do to keep track! Alice loved spending more time with her friends and family - it was hard work, but the academy sent out it's first official graduates in November 2011!
Emma, a top class eventer, asked Alice if she wanted to go spend some time with her and Carey in America. She offered to teach her what she knew and when Alice was hesitant, even said she'd fly Alice's new horse with them. Alice felt bad for Jed, but she couldn't miss that kind of opportunity and so she, Carey and Emma flew out two months later, leaving the academy in the boy's hands.
Nowadays Alice is a working student at Penny Bank Farm in Colorado. Aside from her mare Jazerax (Show Name: Black Fare Faren) , Alice enjoys the company of Emma's Lipizzaner stallion Galahad (Show Name: Strength In Loyalty).
She has yet to see Jed again.
