. Emma moved to Appaloosa Plains because of the death of her Great Uncle Pete. Uncle Pete was a renowned horse breeder in his heyday, producing top quality equines that showed in a variety of disciplines, including Simolympic levels. Sadly, when he grew into old age, he could no longer keep his horses or facility up to standards and had to sell his few remaining horses, keeping only one - an old mare named Why Eye Eyesa, until she gave birth. His once pristine stable was reduced to shabbiness and eventually, it burned down in a freak electrical accident. Sirius had been trapped in his barn, trying to rescue his last pregnant mare from the flames.
Why Eye Eyesa survived and was taken to Emma, who had grown up with horses (and a nosy raccoon, but that's another story). She was looking for a nice horse ever since her old girl Millie passed on. Eyesa was given a clean stall to foal, some nice hay and feed, and eventually a little pinto colt was born - who would be given the name Oh Don Piano, or Pete - to honour Emma's uncle.
Well, what else could Emma do, now that she had horses again? She saw in the paper that Uncle Pete's property (what was left of it) was for sale. It had been split in two, and the only buildings standing after the fire were the old stable management office and two thirds of the stables themselves. She decided to live there and rear the colt herself and give Eyesa to a new family.
So that is how Emma came to live where she is. The place is nearly falling down, but at least the stables are renovated. Emma has a long way to go to rebuild the legacy of her uncle's legendary ranch.
