THIS IS A WIP, AND WILL BE FOR A WHILE XD
Right, I have decided to attempt a tutorial. This is the first time I have tried anything like this, so be kind XD
Ok, first of all, please understand that this is NOT a "hold your hand" or "baby steps" guide. You will need to be able to use the tools listed and have *some* experience in either photoshop or gimp. I will be the first to admit that this is not as easy as I first hoped when I started, however once you have grasped this, there will be no stopping you, and you will have grasped several skills that you can then use to create lots of other CC.
There are 3 channels you can use to customize objects- (each will be covered in some detail)

There are 3 channels you can use to customize objects- (each will be covered in some detail)
1) Overlay- this creates either a plain black or non-recolourable image over the top of a object.
2) Mask- this creates a recolourable section of an object, such as names or logos that you want to be able to change the colour of.
3) Multiplier- this is the one I use least, but if you have time and patience it can create great results. Multipliers give "texture" to otherwise flat objects. I will teach you how to use this to create an 'embroidered' texture, however learning this will be very useful in creating other CC. It is pretty much always used with a mask
*Please note that some methods will require alpha channels when editing. I cannot use alphas in GIMP, as I have never understood it. It is possible, but I am afraid I won't be able to help *
-TSR Workshop
-Gimp or photoshop, with a DDS plug in.
-Basic Gimp or photoshop skills
-Some vague form of patience
Preparing for customizing (do this before any method)
(1) Download the Equus-sims horse rug. Save this somewhere obvious- I suggest creating a new folder just for this project. Yes, all this will work on other clothes and objects, but it's just easier to demonstrate on something I know a lot of people use and have asked for.
(2) Open TSR workshop. If you dont know how to do this, use your intuition XD
(3) Click 'create new project' and wait for the new window to load
More to be added ASAP
