It also depends on your computer's specs. If you have a lower end PC not much is going to help.

I wouldn't necessarily trust whatever the employees at a store say automatically. I have both an Acer desktop and an Acer laptop (no issues with either) and the specs on my Acer laptop are better than my desktop but it lags pretty badly with running games )but I didn't buy it with playing games in mind). I always prefer desktops for gaming because they offer more customization options in the future and it's what I grew up using, haha.
Chloe, have you tried lowering the graphics settings to see if that helps the lag? If it does, that would be a clue that it would be your computer that can't really handle the game. Just remember to restart the game after changing the graphics settings to make sure they take effect.
Some computers can handle TS3 and others can't. It isn't really that black & white but generally most games either fall into a) runs completely fine or b) is pretty laggy in general (unless graphics are really really low). My graphics card is actually said to not be suitable for gaming/is kind of outdated at this point but if you've seen my pictures, I run with barely any lag (the only lag I do have would be because I unmerged my package files, heh) and on all the highest settings.

When I try to start it a black screen with coding appears and says: "Windows cannot find 'SimsLauncher.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." That means you have your game launcher in a different location than specified in the .bat. Right click the .bat file and click edit to change it.

Just stressing -- DO NOT delete the ccmerged.package in your DCBackup or your premium content items will not work properly. It is absolutely crucial that your keep that package in tact. If you do not, you will need to re-create the ccmerged package in order for your premium content to work. I really think that should be mentioned in the OP

Might I ask how this would work for Windows XP users? ^^;

If you right click and edit the .bat file, you can see the paths of all the folders, simply replace them with the paths you have for XP. They shouldn't be too different

You type them in to replace the current paths. An example of a path is: Documents>Electronic arts>The Sims 3
