Hello everyone! This tutorial will show you how to digitally paint on manes and tails for your ponies. A lot of people have requested this, so here it is! Please let me know if anything comes across as confusing or hard to understand. I will fix it! I'm not expecting it to be a perfect tutorial just yet, It's technically a first draft ^^ Everyone learns differently. Don't be shy! Just let me know.
THIS TUTORIAL IS DESIGNED FOR PHOTOSHOP USERS. GIMP USERS ARE MORE THAN WELCOME, BUT I CANNOT HELP YOU WITH CERTAIN TOOLS AND THEIR PURPOSE.
The horse in the video is one of Erins here at Equus
Keep in mind that this mane was not totally finished! It's only to get you started Don't worry! I'm working on a more complete video, but this one is going to take it's place for now.
I'm terribly sorry at how poor the quality came out. I plan on making another video with much, much better quality soon! Camtasia just doesn't want to cooperate with me today... Watch in HD if at all possible
Before we get started though, Some important tips and pet peeves of mine.
- Do NOT smudge the whole mane and/or tail.
- Never go over a 1px brush, UNLESS you are using a very large canvas.
- Use plenty of shades for highlights and shadows!
- You will be painting OVER your photo, this means your tail will be on a separate layer! NEVER paint on the original screen shot.

Mouse Vs. Tablet.
I do own a tablet, and will be using it in this tutorial, HOWEVER it is possible to get a very nice looking mane and tail using a mouse. Simple guide I have created below:
Here we go!
This is the image we will be altering. Feel free to save and practice on this one as well.

Final image with actions applied.
Haha, the tail does look awfully funny being a different color, and there may bee spelling errors, I wrote it pretty quick. but it will have to do. The original one was too dark for tutorial purposes.
If I have left anything out of this tutorial that you would have liked to see, PLEASE let me know. I will gladly add it in.
